    HOLLAND — The Holland Sentinel has taken home 12 placements in the Michigan Press Association's 2024 Better Newspaper Contest. It was also a finalist for Class C Newspaper of the Year, finishing as runner-up.  The contest, which recognized work published Aug. 1, 2023, to July 31, 2024, saw entries from more than 90 newspapers and individual media members throughout the state.  Winners were announced during a ceremony Thursday, May 8, in Frankenmuth.

    ALLEGAN COUNTY — After nearly two decades on the bench in Allegan County, Judge William Baillargeon has announced he will retire later this year.  Baillargeon, who has served as a judge in Allegan County for 18 years, announced his planned retirement during a Law Day Ceremony in his courtroom May 1. His retirement will be effective Aug. 1. Baillargeon was first appointed to the 48th Circuit Court in 2007 by then Gov. Jennifer Granholm.

    Voters approved operating millage renewals for several area school districts, including Holland, West Ottawa, Zeeland, Grand Haven and Spring Lake. Ottawa Area ISD's special education millage renewal and restoration passed with 59.4% support, securing funding through 2044. The special education millage will generate approximately $4.5 million in its first year, helping offset costs for member districts.
