An American man who kidnapped a girl from Edmonton and smuggled her across the U.S. border two and a half years ago pleaded guilty on Monday to two felonies. Noah Madrano, 43, faced six U.S. federal charges and his trial was set to begin Monday in the U.S. District Court of Oregon in Portland. Instead, he submitted a plea deal, forgoing a trial. He plead guilty to sexual exploitation of a child and transportation of a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity.

A group focused on economic development in Alberta is concerned about the financial consequences of provincial legislation focused on gender identity. 2SLGBTQI+ Chamber of Commerce represents queer entrepreneurs and businesses. Executive director Nicholas Rheubottom said his group is concerned about the economic impacts of bills that limit access to health procedures and sports for gender diverse people. Another bill changes rules in the classrooms.

A member of the Edmonton Police Commission plans to serve the remainder of his term from Portugal and says he believes living abroad will not interfere with his role, even though a member of a local lawyers association has concerns. Edmonton city council has voted to ban the sale of knives in convenience stores, but the change won't happen immediately. On Wednesday, Coun. Ashley Salvador's motion passed unanimously. It follows advocacy from several people across Edmonton who urged council to make knives less accessible. Councillors heard from Edmonton police that knives are often purchased by youth or by people using them for illegal purposes.
