NAMIWalks event supports mental health services across Southeast Louisiana

An organization offering free mental health services across nine parishes in Southeast Louisiana is hosting a massive fundraiser on Saturday, May 17, at 9 a.m.The National Alliance on Mental Illness, or NAMI, hosts fundraising walks across the country. NAMI Southeast Louisiana expects upwards of 1,000 people to attend its event, which is taking place at the Safe Haven campus in Mandeville. A weeklong effort to make Louisiana litter-free kicks off on Saturday, April 5. Love the Boot Week runs through April 13 and aims to beautify the state through volunteerism. When the initiative first started, a few dozen teams participated across the state. Since then, it has grown to include hundreds of volunteer groups in all 64 parishes. Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser oversees the effort and said his goal in 2025 is to have 1,000 teams picking up litter during the 7-day stretch. "It’s really a movement.

The new Belle Chasse Bridge is open, and officials say tolling will officially begin on Thursday.Drivers who use the bridge are encouraged to get a GeauxPass now in anticipation of the April 3 deadline.GeauxPasses carry a reduced toll compared to crossing the bridge without a transponder.To sign up for a pass, click here.There are different fees depending on a vehicle's size and the parish a driver lives in.
Upcoming art auction to benefit students at Nicholls State University

There is still time to purchase tickets for an upcoming art auction raising money for student scholarships at Nicholls State University. The Artworks Art Auction is happening on Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Talbot Hall on the university's campus. To date, Artworks has raised more than $88,000 to support students studying art at Nicholls. "As long as I can remember, we've had a thriving art community here," said Jerome Boudreaux, a member of Artworks.
New Orleans Book Festival returns for fourth year with 200-plus authors

New Orleans nonprofit collecting diapers, other items for women in need

A New Orleans nonprofit is partnering with a local restaurant to collect basic necessities for women in need. Through the end of March, which is Women's History Month, Operation Restoration is collecting diapers, feminine hygiene products and other toiletries. "It means a whole lot that you can go into an actual (store) and collect these items completely free and take them home ... versus having to figure out how you’re going to actually purchase them," said Dana Garner with Operation Restoration.
