COLUMBIA, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - South Carolina lawmakers have a reached a compromise that targets the rising rates of liquor liability insurance. The goal is to keep businesses from having to close because they can’t afford the cost. A measure passed on Wednesday addresses the controversial “joint and several” component which held parties fully responsible for damages caused by an alcoholic-related tragedy. The new law says businesses must be at least 50 percent responsible.

By the end of the meeting, faculty members had unanimously voted to disinvite President Nathan Copeland, Executive Vice President and CFO Jeremy Whitaker and the entire Board of Trustees from Limestone’s last-ever commencement ceremonies on May 3.

GAFFNEY, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - An accelerated high school program held at Limestone University has been forced to find another home because of the college’s impending closure. During the 2024-2025 school year, 52 students have participated in the Cherokee County School District’s Scholars Academy on Limestone’s campus. Interim superintendent Dr. Thomas White said CCSD is “saddened” by Limestone’s closure and is restructuring the program.

GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - A large crowd gathered on Friday to celebrate the life of a man who was fatally shot at Florida State University. Tiru Chabba, 45, died on April 17 after investigators say a student opened fire on campus. Chabba, a regional executive with Aramark Collegiate Hospitality, was there for work. Robert Morales, a dining coordinator at FSU, also died. Authorities said law enforcement officers shot the alleged gunman, Phoenix Ikner, 20, when he refused to comply.

North Carolina and Georgia have issued warnings about the lone star tick, which is also the most commonly collected tick in South Carolina. A bite from a lone star tick can cause Alpha-gal syndrome (AGS), which results in potentially life-threatening allergic reactions to red meat and other animal byproducts.

EASLEY, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - A woman whose life was cut short in a shooting outside her work was laid to rest on Friday. A service for Katy Jones, 36, was held at the Chapel of Reflection Mausoleum at Robinson Memorial Gardens at 2 p.m.Jones’ father, Larry Strickland, said she was a registered nurse who worked for 10 years in labor and delivery at AnMed. She attended 5 Point Church and High Praises Church. She was also a nail technician and a supervisor at NRTC Automation.
