MUSKOGEE, Okla. — The Muskogee Police Chief is looking to pull the school resource officers from Hilldale Schools because of a staffing shortage, but the school district is advocating to keep the partnership. “They’re very important in our schools nowadays,” said Shannon Overocker. Shannon Overocker’s 16-year-old son goes to Hilldale High School. In this day and age, she says safety is top of mind.

TULSA, Okla. — The Market at Catholic Charities is making some changes so they can continue to feed people in need. Instead of monthly visits, shoppers will only be able to get food every other month. Shopping the aisles of Catholic Charities Market, we found John Nabors picking up tomatoes and lettuce and soup. “It’s been able to help me quite a bit,” said John Nabors. He said a friend referred him to the market when he needed a little extra to eat and it’s made a big difference for him.

TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa Public Schools is reporting nearly 20% more seniors are on track to graduate. The district is championing two programs they say are instrumental in the change. Inside Graduation Power Hour about a dozens students are learning relational skills. The 45-minute block covers everything from reading intervention to college and career prep. The ultimately goal is to make sure students have the tools they need to graduate on time.

TULSA, Okla. — For 12 years, Reading Partners staff and volunteers have been inside Tulsa Public Schools classrooms. “They just want every student to have access to every resource, every opportunity,” said Olivia Martin. Reading Partners Executive Director Olivia Martin says it’s a one-on-one hour a week between a tutor and a student designed to increase literacy. “Some of them have tutored in the same place for 10 years,” said Martin.

BROKEN ARROW, Okla. — Several viewers reached out to 2 News concerned that the Salvation Army is shutting down its youth center in Broken Arrow. Parents are advocating for it to stay open, saying it’s needed in the community. “It was kind of panic mode for me trying to find somewhere, and I was grateful when I found them,” said Brandi Rodriguez. A few months ago Brandi Rodriguez’s job transitioned back into the office so she needed an afterschool plan for her 7-year-old son Sebastian.
