Two LBCC students got the opportunity to conduct independent chemistry and biochemistry research in a nine-week summer program by Cal State LA that aims to provide undergraduates and community college students with early research opportunities. These students were invited by LBCC science professors to speak at a Sip N Science event held recently, where attendees could ask questions about their experience and research while enjoying a meal.

LBCC held their monthly Sip N Paint event where students and faculty gathered to celebrate Filipino American History Month by painting the Filipino hibiscus flower, gumamela and enjoying traditional Filipino food. Administration assistant for Transfer, Counseling, and Student Support Services Department, Bri Pinkerton was thrilled by the turnout of the event and how each person drew and interpreted the flower differently.

LBCC’s annual Dia de los Muertos celebration was filled with food, activities, live music and performances on Saturday at LAC’s P Building courtyard. Dia de los Muertos, Day of the Dead, is a Mexican holiday that honors deceased loved ones and celebrates the cycle of life. In the courtyard, people were able to make ofrendas, altars, for their friends and family members who have passed, many of which were decorated with flowers, candles, pictures and any memorabilia dedicated to those deceased.

The Vikings honored their Sophomore players at their home game against Compton College and made them proud by dominating the Tartars with a 5-1 victory on Oct. 29. The Vikings scored their first two goals in the first period by midfielders Sydney Trump and Laura Vasquez, with Compton College scoring one quickly after the second goal.

The Vikings put up a tough fight against Compton College, ending with a 2-0 victory in a very close game. After a back and forth battle between the two teams, Vikings’ midfielder Hector Tellez was able to score a goal with two minutes left in the first period, and their second goal was accomplished the same way by forward Jose Mariscal in the second period. Goalkeeper Abraham Ramirez was proud of himself and his team for taking the win, but still believes that they could’ve played a better game.

LBCC Women’s Soccer defeated LA Harbor 9-0 at their home game on Wednesday Oct. 22. The Vikings started strong, as they scored two goals within five minutes and the next two within 20 minutes of the game. After the first period, the Vikings were up 5-0. Head Coach Tino Nunez said that because the girls came out strong and got multiple goals in the beginning, that settled them in for the rest of the game.

Pacific Coast Campus, PCC, has been the name of LBCC’s smaller campus for 75 years, but this August the campus was re-branded as the Trades, Technology, and Community Learning Campus, TTC, and attendees of the 75th Anniversary have a lot to say about the name change.

LBCC held a sip and paint event to celebrate Latinx Heritage Month, inviting students and faculty to paint Aztec masks, enjoy traditional Mexican cuisine, and listen to a playlist of all types of Latinx music. Participants were given three options of different Aztecs masks to sketch out and paint to their own satisfaction. Freshman Steven Coco attended the sip and paint to get involved with all the activities that LBCC has to offer.

Four honorees were inducted and two awards were presented by the LBCC Foundation at the 52nd annual LBCC Hall of Fame on Sept. 26 at The Grand. The Class of 2024 Honorees are Sharifa Batts, Dennis Buchanan, Perette Godwin, and Megan Kerr. The Community Service Award was granted to the Long Beach Century Club and the Campus Friend Award was received by Justin Mendez. Friends, family, alumni, staff, and students were in attendance at the gala to celebrate and honor those who were awarded.
