People in the Giru area who are near floodwaters are being urged to move to higher ground now after an emergency alert by the Burdekin Local Disaster Management Group, and the Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe weather warning for heavy rainfall. In their latest emergency alert, released at 8.45am, the group warned that a major flood was happening now at Haughton river at Giru. “The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has advised the current level is 2.93m and may reach 3m today.

North Queenslanders are being warned more monsoonal rain and flash flooding is set to lash our already-drenched region. Townsville’s Local Disaster Management Group has urged residents to prepare for further inundation overnight Thursday and into the weekend. The Bureau of Meteorology says the monsoon trough that has already dumped more than a metre of rain to some suburbs will move back over the region in coming days.
