Major flooding is expected in Giru Wednesday evening following moderate to heavy rainfall on Tuesday night. The major flood warning comes just over a month since Giru was last inundated with water which caused significant damage to homes. The Bureau of Meteorology have issued the warning for the Haughton River catchment saying further showers and storms are forecast across the catchment for the next several days.

Multiple rescue crews were earlier involved in a major search in extremely adverse conditions after reports an elderly woman was seen slipping into murky floodwaters.

Those living in the Cungulla area have been asked to conserve water due to a possible broken water main Monday morning. Townsville City Council stated it had crews investigating the problem with action immediately underway to minimise the disruption. The council spokeswoman said Cungulla residents may experience water pressure loss or intermittent supply. It’s been advised residents conserve water limiting to indoor use only and to restrict any outdoor water use until further notice.
