Traffic is backed up along University Road and The Ring Road in Douglas as police work to divert traffic off the main road. People in the Giru area who are near floodwaters are being urged to move to higher ground now after an emergency alert by the Burdekin Local Disaster Management Group, and the Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe weather warning for heavy rainfall. In their latest emergency alert, released at 8.45am, the group warned that a major flood was happening now at Haughton river at Giru. “The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has advised the current level is 2.93m and may reach 3m today.

Woolworths and Coles stores across North Queensland remain open for emergency supplies, with people asked to only buy what they need. A Woolworths spokesman said some stores were due to receive deliveries today, however stores were closed in Hermit Park and Fairfield to comply with emergency orders and safety. There are major road closures across the region with the Bruce Highway severed north of Townsville, and the road south of Townsville closed to most traffic.
