A large problem crocodile measuring almost four metres in length has been removed from a near a popular North Queensland boat ramp. Queensland Wildlife Rangers successfully removed the 3.8m saltie from the wild at the Dungeness Boat Ramp in Lucinda, Hinchinbrook on Saturday.

Major flooding is expected in Giru Wednesday evening following moderate to heavy rainfall on Tuesday night. The major flood warning comes just over a month since Giru was last inundated with water which caused significant damage to homes. The Bureau of Meteorology have issued the warning for the Haughton River catchment saying further showers and storms are forecast across the catchment for the next several days.

The Hinchinbrook has again been struck by floodwaters. Ingham has been cut off to the north and south after torrential overnight downpours. The Bruce Highway has been severed at the now notorious Seymour River Bridge to the north of Ingham, after only reopening yesterday afternoon. An incredible 453mm was recorded in the area at Cardwell Gap at the Cardwell Range in the last 24 hours as of Thursday morning.

The Queensland government has vowed to reopen disaster-impacted Hinchinbrook schools as quickly as possible and step up support to individuals and businesses as the Shire faces potential new flooding. Hinchinbrook MP Nick Dametto, joined in Ingham by Education Minister John-Paul Langbroek and Small and Family Business Minister Steve Minnikin on Wednesday, said he was “very concerned” about water levels in the upper catchment of the Herbert River.

Coles Ingham are distributing $100,000 worth of food to the flood-ravaged Hinchinbrook community in the Woolworths car-park at 11am on Thursday. “While our Ingham store remains closed, Coles is giving away $100k worth of refrigerated food that it was able to get into the area on Tuesday,” a Coles spokesman confirmed on Wednesday night. The food has been stored in a fridge-freezer at Woolworths, which has a working generator running overtime.

An Ingham woman says she was “hysterical” while phoning for help as floodwaters swallowed her home she shares with her elderly mum, saying the town desperately needs reinforcements as rivers continue to rise. The Hinchinbrook evacuation centre was continuing to fill on Monday morning, although many were unable to make the journey with emergency services stretched to meet demand.
