It’s tough watching the NHL playoffs when your team isn’t in them. It’s tougher still when the expectation is that your team will very much be in the hunt. And then a bunch of seemingly insane events happen that result in them watching from the sidelines. Such, of course, is the fate of the Vancouver Canucks. Still though, the playoffs have been appointment viewing even for downtrodden Canucks fans. But who are you cheering for? A Canadian team like the Jets makes sense, unless you’re a lunatic.

The term “genre-blending” (and its various offshoots, like -bending or -blurring) is thrown around a lot. Typically, it’s given to an artist who displays any semblance of two different genres. Look up “genre-blending artists” on Google and you get an array of answers from Taylor Swift to Prince. And there’s some truth to those, for sure. For our money though, we’re willing to bet that you won’t listen to an album this year that has more genre twists and turns than Horror by Bartees Strange.

As Commercial Drive winds its way south and morphs into Commercial Street, it slowly becomes one of the more interesting sections of Vancouver. The first block gives you buzzy cafes, restaurants, and bakeries with apartments on top of them. It continues up further to include a couple of art galleries, townhouses, and even a leather supplier. Nestled in the middle of the street is the last remaining single-family house on the block.

Each new situation seems unprecedented in this most recent Canucks’ season, and yet the strange things keep happening. The J.T. Miller situation, for example, where an alternate captain was given leave away from a team for an extended period of time. Or a star in Elias Pettersson suddenly being closer to replacement level than a top-six forward. Or, now, coach Rick Tocchet turning down what was reportedly an offer to pay him like one of the best coaches in the league.

At a press conference shortly after the Vancouver council by-election that saw COPE candidate Sean Orr and OneCity’s Lucy Maloney elected in a landslide, Mayor Ken Sim was contemplative. “We’re going to take a really hard look at ourselves,” said Sim. Makes sense. Some two and a half years after easily electing every single one of the candidates it ran across city council, the parks board and the school board, Sim’s ABC Vancouver party was defeated soundly in the two-seat April by-election.
