June 1, 2025, 1:03 PM HST A man from Ocean View remains out on $50,000 bail after being found guilty of sexual assault charges involving a minor. A two-week bench trial took place in February in Kona Circuit Court for 47-year-old John Lee Franks. On May 29, the court issued its conclusions, finding Franks guilty of both first-degree sexual assault and continuous sexual assault of a minor under the age of 14. The crimes occurred between November 2021 and February 2022.

A major step forward was taken Friday to address the health care needs of East Hawaiʻi as Puna-area state legislators announced $25 million in state funding was secured for Keaʻau Benioff Medical Center during the 2025 state legislative session.
