An Auckland villa bought 48 years ago for $21,000 sold last week for $1.85 million, and the new owners have grand plans for the vintage home. More than 40 groups had inspected the three-bedroom house on Selbourne Street, in Grey Lynn, but Gretchen Houston and her husband Blair were determined that they would be the ones to take possession so they made an offer of $1.8m. Although below the property's CV of $2.58m, it was enough to bring the auction forward.

Two young families were locked in a desperate fight this week to claim a riverside home in Hamilton’s best school zone. Frantic bidding from both saw the price of the five-bedroom house on Jellicoe Drive, in Hayes Paddock, soar past expectations, leaving the vendor $1.161 million richer by the end of the auction. His property had been on the market for less than three weeks when he accepted a pre-auction offer of $1.005m.
