The Metropolitan Transit Authority has unveiled the first major change to the famed New York City subway map since 1979. The historic map commuters are used to seeing on subway cars and in stations across the five boroughs will be phased out in the coming weeks and replaced with the new version. The new maps incorporate feedback from riders and include bright, bold colors for each subway line and more clearly indicate transfer hubs.

The Scripps National Spelling Bee will kick off on May 28 as 245 spellers descend on National Harbor, Maryland, for four days of competition. Ahead of the event, a word selection panel gathers to debate the words picked for the bee. According to the group of panelists, the goal is to assemble a word list that will challenge but not embarrass the dozens of middle- and elementary-school-aged competitors — and preferably produce a sole champion within the two-hour broadcast window for the finals.

There have been rainy months in San Diego County, but we haven't had this wet of an August in a long time (or ever in some communities). Weather in August was generally beautiful, except for the two days the sky split open as Tropical Storm Hilary spiraled through San Diego. In some places, two-day rainfall totals surpassed previous monthly records set nearly 50 years ago, according to data from the National Weather Service. In others, August 2023 was the wettest month on record.
