RALEIGH, N.C. (WBTV) - An investigator with the N.C. State Board of Elections will go to Rockingham County to investigate how decades’ worth of campaign finance reports went missing. That announcement was made Friday afternoon by NCSBE Executive Director Sam Hayes. Hayes issued a new statement one day after a WBTV investigation into the fact that campaign finance reports for Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page are missing for any year before 2017.

RALEIGH, N.C. (WBTV) – Nearly two decades of campaign finance records for Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page are missing. Page, who was first elected sheriff in 1998, is challenging Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger—his chamber’s longtime leader—in what is expected to be a bruising Republican primary early next year. But efforts to turn up Page’s campaign finance reports from before 2017 have come up empty.

CHESTER, S.C. (WBTV) - The school bus involved in a deadly crash in Chester County days before Easter had a history of tire issues, according to the bus’s maintenance records. One student died and others were injured in the incident, which happened April 17, 2025. School officials have said happened after a tire blew whiling driving on I-77 in Chester County, causing the bus to hit a guardrail and flip on its side. WBTV requested the records on the day of the crash.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - Charlotte City Councilwoman Tiawana Brown and her daughters have been indicted on federal charges, according to a press release sent by the US Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina. The charges were made public Thursday morning, hours after Brown sent an early morning press release saying she expected to face federal charges. Brown was elected to the city council in 2023 and represents District 3, covering most of west Charlotte.

RALEIGH, N.C. (WBTV) - A bill pending in the North Carolina General Assembly would make autopsy reports secret. It’s the third time in five years such a proposal has been taken up by lawmakers. The version of the bill currently pending in the general assembly was authored by Rep. Sarah Stevens (R-Surry). Stevens told Axios Raleigh she put forth the proposal at the request of the N.C. Conference of District Attorneys.
