And sometimes crafters die before they’re able to complete the quilt, sweater, or other handiwork they started. Avid knitters Masey Kaplan and Jen Simonic realized they both had the experience of finishing projects that other people had left behind.

Rou Dalagurr is a Wiyot phrase that means “everyone works” or “works together.” An institute at Cal Poly Humboldt has hosted seed and plant exchanges, workshops on tuna canning, and more.

The nonprofit mobilizes outdoor enthusiasts and trains them to collect high-quality samples and data. Adventure Scientists has mobilized volunteers to collect water samples to measure microplastic pollution, tree samples to help identify illegally harvested timber, and more.

Across the country, people who are in recovery from substance use can find community in free yoga classes, CrossFit sessions, bike rides, indoor rock climbs, concerts, and more through the Phoenix. “We essentially use any meaningful activity as a way to bring people together who have been impacted by substance use and empower each other to heal,” says Scott Strode, founder and executive director of the Phoenix. Founded in 2006, the Phoenix has served more than 500,000 people.
