NEW DELHI – While news programmes are broadcast on many Indian television channels, sirens can be heard blaring in the background, forcing anchors to raise their voices as they discuss the latest developments in the conflict between India and Pakistan. This prompted the Home Ministry on May 10 to issue an advisory to TV channels to stop using civil defence air raid sirens – meant to capture the viewer’s attention – in their programmes.

NEW DELHI – India is making every effort to advance an ambitious plan to deepen transportation and economic connectivity with the Middle East and Europe even if the war in Gaza appears to have thrown a spanner in the works.

NEW DELHI – US Vice-President J.D. Vance, on a four-day visit to India, has urged his host country to work more closely with the US, and pressed for more trade concessions and deals in energy and defence equipment. Mr Vance – known for his aggressive articulation of US President Donald Trump’s agenda that has irritated allies and opponents alike – was conciliatory towards India, stating that the Trump administration believed in a strong India-US relationship.

NEW DELHI – A global trade war would appear to be an opportune time to promote economic unity in South Asia. On the recommendation of the country’s commerce ministry made on March 27, Bangladesh’s National Board of Revenue suspended the import of yarn from India through five land ports, including Benapole and Bhomra, from April 13.

TOKYO/NEW DELHI/SEOUL – No accord was signed, and a yawning gap still remains between the two countries. But to all intents and purposes, the first round of trade talks between the US and Japan on April 16 is seen in Tokyo as a relative success. Not that US President Donald Trump moved even a millimetre on any of his positions on tariffs.
