Like many partnerships, opinions differ. In one particular example, it’s the difference of opinion of TV shows that my wife and I have. My (vastly nerdy) upbringing has made me a huge fan of sci-fi, fantasy, action shows, while my wife is a fan of shows like Emily in Paris, Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars.

We live in an instant world. We can binge a whole series on Netflix in one day, receive same-day deliveries from Amazon, and order any food we want to our door with one click of a button. Long gone are the days we would wait eagerly week by week for the next fix of our favorite TV show, or savor a trip to the shops to get something we desperately wanted from afar.

Ross Chandley’s two-part article series on the shadow world of catering (or the service industry, as we’d say State-side) gave me a case of the cold sweats. As a creative individual, I did my time as a server, lured by the flexible hours and good pay that could buoy up my finances in between auditions and writing/performance gigs. While I left that world behind a handful of years ago, it certainly hasn’t left me.
