    In the weeks that followed, turning in the final draft of my debut column on New Thinking, things went downhill rather quickly. I guess it shouldn’t surprise me anymore, what with how fascist the Republican Party is these days, but hearing conservative commentators call for the “eradication of transgender people” at CPAC is downright terrifying.

    As a human rights advocate, I’ve studied and seen the transfer of detainees and hostages between nations. History has shown that the United States and other countries, large and small, have found ways to exchange prisoners in the interest of their respective nations, even when there are no formal diplomatic relations in place. Eyvin Hernandez is hoping such a deal can be done. The 44-year-old is a classic case of someone who was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

    In light of International Women’s Day today and the upcoming two-year anniversary of the Atlanta spa shootings that left seven women dead, it’s imperative that we approach the pervasive problem of gender-based violence with a holistic, multi-pronged approach. According to the World Health Organization one in three women have experienced physical and/or sexual violence at some point in their lives, with younger women having greater risk.

    My five-year stint in Parliament ended after the 2019 General Elections, after which I’d never return to government. I was heart-broken, yet the many messages of support from the young people who had passed through our offices was life-affirming. They enjoyed their time politicking with us, and our way of supporting them inspired them to want a better society and to find ways to change old systems that no longer work for us as a whole.
