When the federal republican constitution of Nepal was promulgated on September 20, 2015, the political parties promised to bring ‘Singha Durbar to people’s doorsteps’. Yet, eight years on, provincial and local governments have seen their powers curtailed by the federal government. Nepal marks Constitution Day on Wednesday, but celebrations this year have been extended to three days—September 19, 20 and 21.

Kathmandu, Sept. 14 -- The Rastriya Swatantra Party has started investigating bribery charges against its central committee member Mohan Jung Thapa levelled by Dhaka Kumar Shrestha, a lawmaker who was sacked following a corruption case. The Swatantra Party had suspended Shrestha in April after a leaked audio recording revealed a voice, allegedly Shrestha's, asking for a bribe. Two weeks later, he lost his position as a member of the House of Representatives.

Nepal, Sept. 9 -- Two cases this week have sparked a serious debate. A man armed with a khukuri who styled himself as a pro-monarchy and anti-MCC activist attacked Nepali Congress Joint General Secretary Mahendra Yadav at Bhrikutimandap in Kathmandu on September 6. The assailant, who the police have identified as Shyam Sapkota, 47, from Nuwakot district attacked Yadav with the traditional weapon as he was exiting the premises of the Reporters' Club.
