In his first game at the helm, the Pirates rewarded their new manager Don Kelly with a 3-2 victory over the Braves Friday evening at PNC Park. Bailey Falter was the game’s winning pitcher, improving to 2-3 on the season, while Bryce Elder suffered the loss, dropping to 2-2. Despite a two-run rally in the top of the ninth, Dennis Santana held on to earn the save, his fourth of the season. Alexander Canario and Jared Triolo both homered for the Pirates in the win.

Don Kelly remembers stopping at Jim Leyland’s house as a kid while trick-or-treating with his friends on Halloween. Leyland’s house apparently was known to pass out the “big candy bars.” The fact he also happened to be the Pirates manager was a bonus. This week, rather than following Leyland up the driveway of his old home, Kelly instead followed his footsteps to the North Shore, officially becoming the team’s new manager following the dismissal of Derek Shelton.

Just 38 games into the season, the Pirates made a significant change within the franchise Thursday, firing Derek Shelton and replacing him with bench coach Don Kelly. Born in Butler, Kelly’s name is familiar to many throughout the area. He has played baseball in Pittsburgh as a high school prospect, college standout and as a nine-year big-leaguer. After retiring as a player in 2016, Kelly returned to his hometown in 2020 to join Shelton’s staff.

Cutch doubles off the very top of the center field wall. Not sure I've seen a ball come that close to being a homer, and just not get over the fence. Reynolds scores from first base. 3-0 Pirates.

Jared Triolo goes deep. Solo shot, his first homer of the year. Pirates now lead 2-0.

Our own @JMackeyPG spoke 1-on-1 with Bob Nutting before today’s game. Plenty was addressed. Check out the conversation here:

Why fire Shelton but not Cherington and Williams? Why hasn't payroll increased? Is Bob Nutting embarrassed by the state of the franchise? @JMackeyPG asked Nutting those questions and many, many more in this Q&A ⬇️ https://t.co/lFUlhFWVWM
