It seems only fitting that Jimmy Carter would return to Washington under blue skies and on a frigid January day to lie in state at the U.S. Capitol. He was sworn in as president during a similar cold snap. I remember because I was there. As President Joe Biden, former presidents and other dignitaries prepare to honor Carter at a funeral service Thursday at the Washington National Cathedral, I’ve been reflecting on the only presidential inauguration I ever attended: Carter’s.

When Baltimore-area Catholics learned the fate of their churches on Wednesday, congregants at eight may have been pleasantly surprised to see them spared in the Archdiocese of Baltimore’s final merger plan. But the surprise wasn’t a pleasant one for members of three other churches, which initially were recommended to stay open but have since been slated for closure.

Annapolis and Baltimore police are jointly investigating the suspicious death of a Baltimore man who had been reported kidnapped hours earlier. Baltimore police officers responded to a report of a home invasion in the Southwest district at 12:45 a.m. Thursday, police said in a tweet Thursday night.

A ceremony to mark the 82nd anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was held Thursday on the last warship to have witnessed the assault that’s still afloat. Military personnel, veterans and members of the public gathered for a chilly noontime ceremony aboard U.S. Coast Guard Cutter 37 on Pier 5. Capt. Andrew Pecora, commander of the Surface Forces Logistics Center in Baltimore, played a recording of the alarm that the crew of 280 men would have heard.
