The 2025 Canadian federal election was held Monday, April 28, to elect members of the House of Commons to the 45th Canadian Parliament. The Liberals won 169 seats — three short of a majority government. The Conservatives remain the Opposition, with 144 seats.

Ontario plans to extend strong-mayor powers to the heads of another 169 municipalities, including those in the Ottawa Valley. With the new powers, heads of council would be able to appoint the chief administrative officer, hire certain department heads, create committees, propose the municipal budget, propose and veto certain bylaws, and bring forward matters for consideration.

When Jeff Collver learned that Algonquin College’s Perth Campus may close next year, he was disappointed but not surprised. “I don’t have any arguments to keep Algonquin here other than the arguments from the town, how our whole town benefits from the school,” said Collver, a graduate of the heritage carpentry and joinery program. The Town of Renfrew says it’s ready to start working with its cultural plan a year after it asked for residents’ input, but local organizations say they have received little information throughout the process. In January 2024, the Town of Renfrew began holding public input sessions on its first-ever cultural plan, with in-person sessions and an online survey open over the course of a few weeks at the beginning of the year.

This new year meant a new owner, and a new name, for one of Renfrew’s second-hand stores. On Jan. 2, Subin Ramadhas reopened a beloved thrift store in Renfrew under a new name: “Love Again Thrift Store.”“People are saying they are really happy to have the store back,” Ramadhas said, adding that while the cold weather may slow down traffic in the store sometimes, the response from the community has been good.
