The Ontario Court of Appeal found the province’s COVID-19 lockdown regulations that restricted peaceful assembly were unconstitutional, after former Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston member of provincial parliament Randy Hillier appealed an earlier court decision. Hillier was charged in 2021 under the Reopening Ontario (A Flexible Response to COVID-19) Act (ROA) for organizing or hosting protests against pandemic measures that spring.

Ontario plans to extend strong-mayor powers to the heads of another 169 municipalities, including those in the Ottawa Valley. With the new powers, heads of council would be able to appoint the chief administrative officer, hire certain department heads, create committees, propose the municipal budget, propose and veto certain bylaws, and bring forward matters for consideration.
