It’s been a minute since Virginia “Ginger” Hislop was a student at Stanford Graduate School of Education (GSE). When she started at the GSE in 1936 — then the Stanford University School of Education — her plan was to get her bachelor’s of education, which she did in 1940, and obtain her master’s of education so she could teach, which she started directly after.

Bonnie Garmus, bestselling author of Lessons in Chemistry, says she wrote the first chapter of her novel on the heels of a presentation meeting gone awry because a man in the room claimed credit for her work and no one said anything in her defense. As she stewed, Garmus — who was a copywriter in tech at the time — thought about the many other women who felt invisible or ignored.

Continuity. Character. Community. These are the core concepts that architects had in mind when designing the future look and feel of Stanford Graduate School of Education (GSE). The project, scheduled to be completed by fall 2025, includes the preservation and restoration of the GSE’s education building (also known as the north building) and the Barnum Center; the construction of a new south building adjacent to Barnum Center; and a new courtyard that will connect the three structures.
