Oscar Lopez has a reputation for building community and using his art to tie contemporary experiences to Indigenous history. At the opening of Lopez’s show, “Admirados y Borrados” (“Admired and Erased”), at M Stark Gallery in Half Moon Bay, a low-rider was parked out front, and a bottle of tequila and glasses were on a table by the door. The gallery was full of friends, supporters, former students, and strollers on Half Moon Bay’s Main Street who wanted to check out the party and Lopez’s art.

When you think about San Francisco’s Chinatown, the first thing that comes to mind might be its art: pagoda-style architecture and dragon-decorated street lamps that showcase the ancient, exotic culture of a civilization half the globe away. It might surprise you to learn that Asian artists created little of that art, and the works have seldom told the stories of the local community that has lived there for over a century.

Click here to zoom in on the above image. In her exhibition at San Francisco’s Institute of Contemporary Art, artist Suchitra Mattai explores her own immigration story and those of her ancestors. When people leave their home countries, Mattai said, they can carry only so many physical possessions. That makes their memories all the more precious as ties to their past lives.

UKIAH, Ca., 7/9/24 — As part of the Grace Hudson Museum’s current show, Deep Roots, Spreading Branches: Fine Woodworking of the Krenov School, the museum is hosting a panel on Saturday of three of the most influential artisans in James Krenov’s School of Fine Woodworking in Fort Bragg. Creighton Hoke helped establish the school, then known as the College of the Redwoods Fine Woodworking Program, in 1981.

MENDOCINO Co., 7/10/24 – Round Valley is one step closer to building a skatepark after the Mendocino County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously on Tuesday to begin the process of investigating options to transfer county-owned land near the Covelo Airport to the Round Valley Lions Club, which maintains Covelo Community Park. It’s the first part of a dream finally coming to fruition since the community started advocating in 2022 to provide local youth a place to call their own.

FORT BRAGG, Ca., 7/10/24 — The backers of Carnival by the Sea in Fort Bragg had one vital question: Would Big Eli make it over Highway 20 for 2024’s carnival? In 2023, the iconic Ferris wheel didn’t make it to Fort Bragg. And what is a carnival without a Ferris wheel? Midway of Fun Amusements, which puts on the carnival, has several carnivals running at the same time. “They divide up the rides between those places,” said Cindy Lemas of the Fort Bragg/Mendocino Lions Club.

Written by Sam Shepard, The Tooth of Crime is a story of ego and how aging can challenge one’s relevancy and bring out peoples’ primitive savagery.
