In the 1990s, village sportsmen were the biggest magnets for green, naïve village girls, with some even attracting the attention of the most sought-after village "humdingers," and many went as far as pinning down married women due to their prowess on the field. Village footballers were the equivalent of today’s music stars, drawing women in like moths to a flame. They had the easiest time during that era. These men were the village "bulls," siring children with reckless abandon.

When we first arrived in Nairobi in the 90s, many estates, particularly in Eastlands (commonly referred to as Eastlando), were in fairly good shape with well-planned buildings. There were no haphazardly constructed skyscrapers, poor infrastructure, or overcrowded streets full of stray dogs, lactating pigs and ducks.

In the ‘90s the best places that youth hooked up and love blossomed was church youth meetings and inter-school activities, with church offering the best opportunities. Church activities were the most promising hunting ground as youths worshiped and engaged in various activities such as music festivals and practice sessions.

Dressing code in the 90s was a blend of a little swag and a balance between modernity and smartness, there was no showcasing of acres of flesh that border on soft nudity. It was the era when men wore oversize shirts and trousers. And to spice it up, men used to sag the oversize pants. This fashion craze was heavily borrowed from American hip hop artists like Snoop Dog, the Westlife, Backstreet Boys and some WWF wrestlers.

My barbershop is located within a residential area and anyone familiar with the high rise flats synonimous with the eastern side part of Nairobi city knows exactly what I’m talking about. Daily dramas and hullabaloos never end and at times, I do try as much as possible to mind my own business, but most of the time I still find myself outside there getting entertained.
