Walking home with my son and a friend from a football match at the local stadium, we overheard two middle-aged ladies behind us, animatedly discussing the outcome of the weekend’s English premier league matches. This fascinated us and curiosity had me engaging them tongue in cheek to understand their interest and motivation. They gave a burst of hearty laughter and nonchalantly declared that they were trying to win the various jackpots that are on offer in sports betting.

In the 1990s, village sportsmen were the biggest magnets for green, naïve village girls, with some even attracting the attention of the most sought-after village "humdingers," and many went as far as pinning down married women due to their prowess on the field. Village footballers were the equivalent of today’s music stars, drawing women in like moths to a flame. They had the easiest time during that era. These men were the village "bulls," siring children with reckless abandon.

Our childhood will always be the place with the most profound memories. These memories later shape our entire existence and outcome later in life.
