DULUTH, Minn. — This weekend, the Great Lakes Aquarium held a birthday celebration for two of its most popular animals. The two female otters, Agate and Ore, turned 12 years old this year. Each year to celebrate, the aquarium holds a birthday party for the otters, which includes crafts, a birthday cake and animal encounters. The otters were rescued and brought to Duluth after breaking into a craw fish farm in Louisiana when they were around a year old.

DULUTH, Minn. — With Easter right around the corner, the 10th annual Egg-Splosion event was held in Lincoln Park. Northern Expressions Arts Collective hosted Egg-Splosion at the Harrison Community Center on Saturday. The Easter event welcomed community members to have fun with games and crafts. With the rising price of eggs, this year the event was budget friendly as wooden and plastic eggs were decorated instead. The free event allows for kids and families to have fun at no cost.

DULUTH, Minn. — All aboard!!! Minnesota’s largest model train set returned to the St. Louis County Depot this weekend. While the Depot is home to many large trains, this time they were scaled down. A dozen members of the Minnesota Free-Mo Modelers came together to create the miniature model. Small trains whistled through the varying landscapes of the model, from the country side, to city skylines. The team built and assembled around 30 modules by hand to create the model.

DULUTH, Minn. — A Duluth church may be the temporary host for Chum’s Safe Bay Program. The usual host of Safe Bay is the Damiano Center, which will be undergoing construction this summer, so the program looks to move to the Vineyard Church on Arrowhead Road. Safe Bay offers secure overnight parking for people living in their vehicles. The proposed location at the church is in the back parking lot, which also offers access to restrooms and showers.

DULUTH, Minn. — With less than a week left, Chum is looking to meet its goal for Minnesota’s March FoodShare Campaign. Chum is around halfway to its goal of filling the food shelf with 40,000lbs of non-perishable food items, as well as raising an additional $80,000 to purchase additional food. The March FoodShare is Chum’s biggest food drive of the year, supporting individuals and families in need.

DULUTH, Minn. — Find any old clothes while doing some spring cleaning? Students with UMD’s Criminology and Sociology Club are looking for clothing donations for unhoused youth. UMD students are collecting clothes and shoes at the drive. Those items will be donated to the Carlton County Restorative Justice Center, supporting unhoused youth. The Criminology and Sociology Club focuses on getting involved not only on campus, but in surrounding communities.

DULUTH, Minn. — Hundreds of Duluthians gathered at Duluth East High School on Saturday, sharing their concerns at a town hall. Practicing Democracy, a local political action committee, hosted the town hall, which saw residents engaging in the discussion surrounding local, state, and federal issues. Former Minnesota State Representative Jen Schultz is a co-leader of the effort, and spoke at the town hall. Other local leaders spoke on important issues, such as education cuts and federal funding.

DULUTH, Minn. — Saturday, local experts were sharing tips at the Depot’s annual Spring Gardening Extravaganza. With the turn of seasons, many northlanders are looking forward to getting their hands dirty this spring. The theme of this years event was “creating a better garden for a better life.” Speakers shared their insights into the garden world before attendees broke out into workshops, focusing on different types of gardening, from house plants, to produce.
