Temple voters return annual town meeting to Monday night in March

TEMPLE — Voters will gather for the annual town meeting next year on the second Monday evening in March. The decision was made in a 14-11 vote at Saturday’s annual town meeting. Town officials proposed holding the 2026 meeting on the last Saturday in March, which has been the case since COVID-19. However, Toni Andrews made an amendment to return it to the second Monday in March. “We always had our town meeting on the second Monday of March until I think the pandemic,” Andrews said.

JAY — By a 7-5 vote, Regional School Unit 73 directors on Thursday, March 27, approved the first reading of five policies relating to harassment, sexual harassment, discrimination and Title IX. Voting in favor were Danielle Brotherton, Elaine Fitzgerald and Tina Riley of Jay; Sarah Jamison and Andrew Sylvester of Livermore; and Lenia Coates and Don Emery of Livermore Falls.

JAY — Two Spruce Mountain High School teachers spoke Thursday night, March 27, at the Regional School Unit 73 directors meeting regarding the arrest of the art teacher and things said at the March 13 board meeting. On March 8, art teacher Jan Barlow was arrested and charged with sexual exploitation of minor. He also faces charges for allegedly trying to have the minor victim destroy evidence. He resigned March 11.

JAY — LeeAnn Lavoie, director of Healthy Community Coalition in Farmington shared information with Regional School Unit 73 directors Thursday night, March 27, about a five-year grant received in partnership with the district to help reduce substance use. “In 2024 we partnered with RSU 73 to submit a grant to the Office of National Drug Control Policy and the Center Disease Control and Prevention to build partnerships and coalitions aimed at preventing substance use among youth,” Lavoie said.
Spruce Mountain High School students describe chaga mushroom study

JAY — Regional School Unit 73 directors on March 13 were given an update on the mycosilviculture [chaga mushroom] project being conducted by teachers and students. In August 2023 directors approved a contract for JustNiks Micosilva LLC to work with teachers and students to raise chaga mushrooms on district-owned land behind Spruce Mountain High School. Materials needed to grow the mushrooms would be provided and when they are harvested, proceeds will be donated to the district for STEM projects.
