After an accounting error exposed an additional budget shortfall, Burlington’s mayor is proposing limiting raises for her office and department heads. Burlington Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak is proposing to keep her salary stagnant and is asking department heads to accept lower-than-planned raises after the Vermont city’s leaders discovered an additional $1.8 million shortfall in the fiscal year 2026 budget.

The Vermont Legislature adjourned its session Monday night after passing a sweeping education-reform bill. In January, Republican Governor Phil Scott offered a wide-ranging proposal to reform the state’s education system. While the legislature had to extend its session and schedule a veto session to settle on an agreement, lawmakers announced the terms of the reform Monday, and Gov. Scott is expected to sign the proposal into law.

Thousands of people attended Burlington, Vermont’s No Kings rally on Saturday. Speakers included the state’s Congressional representative and a Columbia University student that had been detained by ICE. The nearly 9 acres of Burlington’s Waterfront Park was packed with people for Vermont’s largest No Kings rally. People came out for a number of reasons, but a common theme was disgust over Trump administration actions and policies.
