The parents of a two-year-old Newry boy who lost a battle with leukaemia just weeks after being diagnosed have vowed to help other families “facing the unimaginable”. Chester Byrne was diagnosed with B-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia at the start of April, within days of attending hospital following a fall while playing in which he hit his head. The toddler’s parents have previously spoken of how that accident drew their attention to other worrying symptoms, which they say were missed.

Police patrols have increased in a part of east Belfast after a pet cat was found dead after being asphyxiated with a plastic bag. Rescue cat Toby, who was around five-years-old, was found by a horrified walker in an alleyway at Rosebery Gardens in the Woodstock area. It is understood the beloved family pet had been placed in a plastic bag, which was then tied around its neck, while there was also evidence it had struggled to escape.

A DUP MLA has refused to say if his party colleagues should receive guarantees from loyalist bands that they will not play sectarian tunes before attending their parades. North Belfast DUP Assemblyman Philip Brett was asked to clarify if his fellow party members should seek such a guarantee in the wake of his attendance at a band parade in Co Antrim, during which the ‘No Pope of Rome’ tune was played by bandsmen.
