MP Gregory Campbell has met the owners of the former Shackleton Barracks to discuss the potential economic boost from the Government’s renewed commitment to the Heathrow Airport Expansion. Back in 2019, before the multi-billion-pound third runway project was shelved, the Ballykelly site was in the running to become one of several ‘logistics hub’. With the aim of dispersing thousands of jobs beyond the South East, components were to be assembled off-site before being transported to London.

COUNCILLORS have backed plans for wider public engagement over its Green Lane Museum in Roe Valley Country Park. On Tuesday (April 15) members of Cloonavin’s Leisure and Development Committee agreed the facilities were a valuable heritage asset that deserved a bigger audience. The listed early 19th century linen mill houses a collection of exhibits relating to rural life in the Roe Valley including farming, local trades and linen industries.
Limavady Show ‘could fold’- councillor warns

COUNTY Londonderry’s only agricultural show at Aghanloo near Limavady “could fold” if organisers aren’t given support from Causeway Coast and Glens Council. The warning was delivered by DUP’s Aaron Callan after councillors met to endorse this year’s funding package for non-council organised events. Last month a list of 10 recipients was approved at committee level. The County Londonderry Agricultural Show was the only event whose application failed.

DUP demands review of scoring system as GAA clubs scoop 50% of grants

THE DUP has demanded an independent review of an application process that saw GAA clubs win around half the cash from a new council grant scheme. In response, the Sinn Féin chair of the committee that oversees the fund accused them of “casting aspersions” on the integrity of council officers. The £600,000 Capital Grants Programme was established last year to help sports and community organisations develop facilities.
District rates up 3.65%

CAUSEWAY Coast and Glens Borough Council has agreed a district rate rise of 3.65 per cent, as predicted in last week’s paper. Rates bills include the district rate and regional rate which has yet to determined by Stormont. The council’s figure was struck at a special meeting on Thursday evening. For householders, the effect will be £21.70 per year or 42p each week, based on a house within the Borough at an average capital value of £124,728.
Council U-turn on Benone Holiday Park sell-off plan

A COUNCIL committee has recommended abandoning plans for an immediate sell-off of Benone Holiday and Leisure Park. Located a stone’s throw from the famous beach, the centre contains a caravan site, glamping pods, golf courses, tennis courts and the ‘Waves Bistro’ restaurant. With running costs escalating, Causeway Coast and Glens Council engaged consultants to study the site’s potential. Their report concluded with a recommendation to release it onto the open market.

But while victory was declared on May 8 1945, just four years earlier the threat of invasion by German forces, that had by then over-run much of Western Europe, was very real. THE borough’s road network is in need of improvements but officials are facing challenging budget constraints. That was the key message to emerge from the Department for Infrastructures (DfI) address to Causeway Coast and Glens councillors on Tuesday evening. Divisional Roads Manager Mr Alan Keys said: “Northern Ireland’s road network is our largest and most valuable strategic infrastructure asset delivering every day for people to go about their daily lives.
