If you’re a dyed-in-the-wool Razorback fan, and you’ve ever spotted a cyclist and wondered, ‘Could that be Jeff Long?’ you might have been onto something. “I ride it three or four times a week,” Long said during a recent interview. “Sometimes more.”At 64, Long’s daily rides typically span 25 to 40 miles. However, there’s a unique tradition he upholds on his birthday.
Real Deals: Baumann and Crosno lands $4.98M in funding

Fayetteville homebuilder Baumann and Crosno Construction has picked up a three-year funding agreement from Searcy-based First Security Bank worth $4.98 million. The funding is tied to 21 acres Baumann and Crosno recently acquired on West County Line Road in Springdale north of the Benton/Washington county line for $2.27 million. The purchase price equals $2.48 per square foot.

NSF appoints Sarah Goforth to lead regional innovation initiative

Sarah Goforth, the former executive director of the University of Arkansas Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation (OEI), has joined the National Science Foundation (NSF) as a program director in the Regional Innovation Engines program. Goforth, known for initiating major projects like the Venture Intern Program, Master of Science in Product Innovation, GORP incubator, and Heartland Challenge Startup Competition, will now oversee the NSF Engines program.
Berkley expands in-house manufacturing capabilities

California-based Berkley, a major packaging vendor for Walmart Inc., closed a deal recently to acquire Sisco Corp. (also known as Sisco Box or Sisco Container), a family-owned business based in Nashville, Ill. The financial terms were not disclosed. Sisco’s 14 employees now work for Berkley, which designs, manufactures and assembles retail displays and packaging. Based in Los Angeles, Berkley first opened a Northwest Arkansas office in 2016. Approximately half of its 68 employees work in the region.
Nabholz Corp. acquires Van Buren company

Arkansas multi-service contractor Nabholz Corp. recently bolstered its infrastructure division with the acquisition of excavation contractor Brother’s Construction of Van Buren from Todd and Terry Mooney. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. “The future has never been brighter,” Terry Mooney said. “We’re excited to see the vision of Nabholz unfold.”Brother’s Construction was founded in 1994.
Veteran investors join Ozark Green Roofs to drive growth

Fayetteville-based Ozark Green Roofs (OZGR) has announced a strategic expansion in its ownership structure, adding three seasoned investors: Bob East, his son Cash East, and son-in-law Patrick Couch. Founder Lee Porter will retain her position as the majority partner. Financial specifics of the investment remain confidential. In addition to the four owners, OZGR has three employees. “We are honored to have Bob, Cash and Patrick join the Ozark Green Roofs team,” Porter said.
Northwest Arkansas sees lowest mortgage activity since 2015

According to Attom Data Solutions, mortgage originations in Northwest Arkansas were down 5.5% in the first quarter this year compared with the same time last year. The total marked the region’s lowest activity in more than eight years. The California company, which tracks national housing and foreclosure data, issued its first-quarter mortgage report on June 5.
Steve Galen announces Bentonville mayoral campaign

Longtime Bentonville resident Steve Galen, who has lived in the city since 1996, is making his first run for public office this fall. Galen told the Northwest Arkansas Business Journal he will challenge Mayor Stephanie Orman, the city’s top elected official since January 2019. Early voting in the general election begins Oct. 21. Election Day is Nov. 5. “Bentonville is one of the most amazing places to live in the country, but we stand at a pivotal point in time,” he said.
