    The scale of transformational opportunity facing the Highlands and Islands economy has been quantified for the first time by a new report. The study suggests there are 251 planned development projects in the pipeline of what it refers to as regional transformational opportunities (RTOs). Together they represent a potential total investment value of up to £100.35bn - and could bring around 16,000 jobs at the peak of construction and development - along with 18,000 operational jobs by 2040.

    Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce is calling for urgent government action following a wave of job losses across the North Sea energy sector. Speaking at a press conference in Aberdeen this morning, chamber chief executive Russell Borthwick said promises made by the UK Government to protect jobs in the North Sea had been broken – with almost 600 job losses announced over the past fortnight.

    Livingston James has reported its best-ever first quarter performance, as organisations reignite hiring plans paused during a subdued 2024. Net fee income (NFI) rose by 21% during the first three months of this year, compared to the same period last year, marking the strongest start to the year in the firm’s 15-year history. Headquartered in Glasgow and Edinburgh, the group comprises executive search firm Livingston James and finance recruitment business Rutherford Cross.

    Work has begun on a seven-story capsule hotel in Edinburgh. Developed by TARKA Hotels in collaboration architecture firm Studio LBA, the property will be situated just off St Andrew Square. Drawing inspiration from the Japanese capsule hotel concept, the project involves retrofitting a vacant building that previously held various uses - including a job centre, office space and retail - with 242 beds over seven stories, including a rooftop restaurant and bar.

    Matthew Algie has signed a new partnership with CalMac. The deal will supply 13 ferries sailing from Scottish ports Wemyss Bay, Uig, Ullapool, Troon, Kennacraig, Oban, Mallaig and Ardrossan, with a new 'coffee cabin' also being created at Ardrossan Port. The Glasgow-based coffee suppliers has installed 42 machines, with a mixture of Bean to Cup, Traditional Barista, and Bulk Brewers. It expects annual consumption under the tie-up to altogether amount to more than 500,000 cups.
