The Education Secretary has announced £40m in funding for crisis-hit Dundee University. Jenny Gilruth said the money has been agreed “in principle” and will be given out over a two-year academic period. She said the Scottish Government had used a special power to order the Scottish Funding Council (SFC), which usually issues cash independently, to give the award directly to Dundee, due to the “exceptional circumstances” surrounding the university.

Housebuilding across Scotland has continued to plunge, as figures reveal new projects are at their lowest level since 2012. The number of housebuilding starts in 2024-25 decreased by 11% compared to the year before – a fall of 1,906 homes. The number of houses being completed decreased by 4%, a reduction of 746.

Perth and Kinross Council has voted to build Perth’s new leisure centre PH2O at Thimblerow, as part of a £97m investment in local leisure facilities. Revised plans for PH2O now include flumes and a larger splashpad play area, and for Capability Scotland to relocate its Upper Springland facilities to the Glover Street site. At a meeting on 18 June, councillors voted by 24 votes to 15 in favour of the proposals tabled before them.

The UK Government will step in to provide funding for a Rolls-Royce welding skills centre, following Scottish ministers’ refusal to back the proposal. Scottish Secretary Ian Murray offered his guarantee that the UK Government would step in, via the Ministry of Defence, to ensure the investment is made. Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes has signalled the Scottish Government will not be changing its “principled” position on providing public money for the defence industry.
