May 4-So it seems worth asking: Why did it close down in the first place? The answer amounts to three big factors: The prison was much more expensive to operate than facilities elsewhere in the country; it housed a startlingly small number of prisoners; and finally - this seems important - it was deemed vulnerable to future escape attempts. Concerns about Alcatraz' expense were aired from the time it was built and opened on Oct. 13, 1933. But it was an escape that accelerated the closure decision.

If you grew up in San Francisco, you almost certainly have a bond with Kezar Stadium. The Golden Gate Park stadium, which quietly turns 100 years old Friday, has hosted more than 175 San Francisco 49ers games; thousands of high school football contests; and countless soccer matches, run club hangouts, parades, graduations and middle school track meets. “Dirty Harry” Callahan tortured the Scorpio killer on this field. What was Steph Curry's first day of work like? Filled with turmoil. Also, he looked like a "Muppet Babies" version of his current self. Where I dig up @sfchronicle's earliest photos of Curry (they were on CD-ROM!) and realize how far we've come. 🏆🐐💯 https://t.co/ko2niX3L0V

Why did Alcatraz close down in 1963? It was prohibitively expensive to operate, held a maximum of 336 prisoners and — this seems important — officials said it was increasingly vulnerable to escape. The story Trump should've read before hitting "send": https://t.co/l8PvspURLo

Happy 100th birthday Kezar Stadium! 🏟️🎂❤️ This was going to be a pure nostalgia trip, but I stumbled upon a mystery. Who was Mary Kezar, and did she even want this arena? A story of nepotism, opportunism, Led Zeppelin ... and a happy ending for all? https://t.co/cFjWPjxu2R
