It was the mid-1980s and the San Francisco Chronicle had a dire warning for the city. It wasnโ€™t about the future of downtown, or crime, or poverty. To the contrary, the newspaper posited in a two-part series, that San Francisco was in danger of being overwhelmed by the finer things in life. Or as the reportโ€™s expert, sociologist John Mollenkopf, decried: โ€œHow many different types of croissants do you want?โ€Article continues below this adCalled โ€œSpecial Report: The Rich Metropolis,โ€ the Sept.

But just 19 short years ago the future was so bright, Gavin Newsom and one of the more popular Kennedys showed up to the launch โ€” an ultra-luxe affair that included rose petals on the walkways, tuxedo-clad musicians on the escalators and aerial dancers rappelling from the dome. It was 1885 in San Francisco, and much of the city was still an unrealized dream. Golden Gate Park was still mostly saplings and sand dunes. The Richmond District was cemeteries to the east and windswept rocks to the west. The cheapest path to Lands End was a steam railroad that chugged precariously over San Francisco's northern cliffs. But the reward upon arrival was huge. The city's wealthiest man had opened the 20 acres surrounding his home to the public.

Being assigned my first San Francisco Chronicle movie review in 2003 felt like its own cinematic moment. I had been a superfan of critic Mick LaSalle, who started in 1985. He was clever and snarky and initially was stuck with all the sequels, horror films and bad teen comedies, my wheelhouse when I was 14. I'm sure LaSalle was relieved to miss the fourth-rate skater comedy "Grind" when I joined the reviewer ranks in 2003.
