AbstractPrimary cilia are antenna-like organelles which sense extracellular cues and act as signalling hubs. Cilia dysfunction causes a heterogeneous group of disorders known as ciliopathy syndromes affecting most organs. Cilia disassembly, the process by which cells lose their cilium, is poorly understood but frequently observed in disease and upon cell transformation. Here, we uncover a role for the PI3Kα signalling enzyme in cilia disassembly.

In 1943 the music critic Desmond Shawe-Taylor placed an advertisement in Exchange & Mart offering a pair of trooper’s breeches for sale. A number of men replied, one asking ‘Have they been worn by a trooper or just yourself?’, while another observed: ‘It is always good to see the boys pulling themselves into tight troopers and then admire the “smashing finish”.

The selection had been made by the gay arts patron Peter Watson, and among the 14 pictures on display was Two Figures in the Grass, painted the previous year, in which a pair of naked men are depicted, one lying on top of the other.
