DULUTH — A sign obscured by a springtime snowstorm could leave some of the city’s homeless residents in the lurch, as a local warming center prepares to close its doors at the end of this month. The Vineyard Church, 1533 W. Arrowhead Road, has proposed to host Safe Bay, a local designated site where homeless people living out of their vehicles may park overnight in a supervised setting.

DULUTH — A jury recently handed down a verdict in a personal-injury lawsuit that could cost the Spirit Mountain Recreation Area more than $900,000. But Spirit Mountain’s actual financial exposure from that judgment will likely be whittled to no more than a $10,000 insurance deductible, according to Ann Glumac, the organization’s executive director.

DULUTH — Public health workers who often toil behind the scenes were thrust into the spotlight Tuesday when the St. Louis Board of Commissioners presented awards to four standouts in their profession. The honorees included: Dr. Jan Baldwin, a physician for Essentia Health Clinic in Hibbing and a leader in the Northern St. Louis County Perinatal Substance Use Collaboration. Nathan Kesti, an outreach specialist responding to people in need in downtown Duluth.

DULUTH — St. Louis County is preparing to invest $45 million in a new maintenance facility just east of Chisholm. County crews currently house and maintain a fleet of vehicles, including 17 tandem plows and a host of other equipment, out of a Hibbing campus they also share with city operations and those of the Minnesota Department of Transportation. But Public Works Director Jim Foldesi said the current facility no longer meets the county’s needs for both field and shop operations.
