    BRIMSON, Minn. — Three wildfires in northeastern Minnesota continue to spread Wednesday morning, with one of them more than tripling in size. The Jenkins Creek Fire east of Hoyt Lakes jumped from 6,800 acres Tuesday to 20,593 acres Wednesday morning, according to the federal government’s Incident Information System at wildfire.gov.

    DULUTH — Safe Bay, a place where homeless people living out of their vehicles may park overnight without fear of harassment, is expected to begin operating Wednesday in a parking lot behind the Vineyard Church, 1533 W. Arrowhead Road. After more than two hours of testimony and deliberation Tuesday evening, members of the Duluth Planning Commission voted 8-0 to approve a permit for the operation, which will be managed by Chum as part of a citywide initiative to address homelessness.

    DULUTH — A resolution intended to show support for the Environmental Protection Agency freshwater lab turned into a vehicle for city councilors to object to many other proposed federal cuts that could affect their community. Seven amendments were made to an EPA ordinance originally introduced by 1st District Councilor Wendy Durrwachter on Monday night.

    DULUTH — City Councilors were not swayed by the fact that all eight people who weighed in Monday night on a project that could bring a 60-unit condominium project to Woodland Avenue spoke in opposition to the development. The council approved a developer’s rezoning request for the site by an 8-1 vote. The lone voice of council dissent belonged to Wendy Durrwachter, who represents Duluth’s 1st District, including the Woodland neighborhood where the condo development is proposed.
