A San Miguel County man who police say was shot in November by two off-duty security guards has died, and attorneys for his estate have filed a notice of their intent to sue the city of Santa Fe and police in connection with his death. Had Santa Fe officers responded appropriately to Carlos Mendoza's report of an earlier altercation with one of the guards, he would not have been shot later, the lawyers allege in the notice, filed last month.

Prosecutors can move low-level cases against Spanish-speaking defendants to a higher court but need to produce English transcripts of some evidence, a state ddistrict judge ruled Thursday. Moving the misdemeanor cases from Magistrate Court to District Court does not violate the defendants' rights to equal protection or due process under the law, Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer held.
