Pena homers twice as Sod Poodles take biggest win of the month

SPRINGDALE, Ark. (KFDA) - The Amarillo Sod Poodles defeated the NW Arkansas Naturals, 7-1, on Friday. Manuel Pena got Amarillo off to a hot start, homering on the very first pitch of the game. It was the third time in franchise history that a Sod Poodle has done so. They added more crooked numbers in the 2nd and 3rd innings. NW Arkansas scored their lone run in the 4th, and Amarillo secured the win with runs in the 5th and 7th. Pena led the team with a game-high three RBIs, batting 2-4.

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - Yesterday, PGA golfer JJ Spaun won the U.S. Open, taking home $4.3 million. It was his first major title, but the 30th major title won by a former Korn Ferry Tour golfer. Owned and operated by the PGA, the Korn Ferry Tour announced last week that Amarillo will be its newest stop. Every young golfer dreams of the day that they can play professional on the PGA Tour, put on the green jacket after winning the Masters and call themselves a champion.

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - Arena football has existed in Amarillo for decades, whether it was the Dusters or the Venom, but the town didn’t see any action in the arena football world this season. That changes next year with a new squad coming to town. The West Texas Warbirds are relocating from Odessa to Amarillo in 2026 under Leif Kertis, the same President and CEO who owned the team during their undefeated championship seasons in 2021 and 2022.

Tascosa Golf Club will host the inaugural OccuNet Classic on June 11-14, 2026. The tournament boasts a $1 million purse, with 156 prospective PGA golfers competing. Golfers like Scottie Scheffler, Max Homa and Justin Thomas all played on the Korn Ferry Tour on their journey to the PGA.

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - The Amarillo Sod Poodles defeated the San Antonio Missions, 3-1, on Tuesday. San Antonio got on the board first with a run in the 5th, but Amarillo scored all three of theirs in the bottom of the 8th to secure the win. Christian Cerda led the Sod Poodles with two RBIs, batting 2-3 on the night. Jose Fernandez added an RBI of his own. On the mound, Alfred Morillo picked up the win, pitching two innings with three strikeouts and allowing no earned runs.

TULSA, Okla. (KFDA) - The Amarillo Sod Poodles defeated the Tulsa Drillers, 6-5, on Friday. Amarillo got on the board first in the second inning, but Tulsa took a 3-2 lead by the end of the 5th. Amarillo answered in the sixth, and scored the game-winning run in the top of the 9th. Christian Cerda led the Sod Poodles, batting 1-3 with two RBIs, including a game-winning solo homer in the 9th. He was joined by Manuel Pena’s 2 RBIs on the team.

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - The Michelob Ultra Men’s City Championship golf tournament began on Friday at Ross Rogers. One of, if not the most unique format out of all the summer tournaments, the Men’s City Championship is head-to-head match-play style. This means, of the two players who are paired for the round, the better score on each individual hole earns a point, and the player with the most points at the end of the round advances.

TULSA, Okla. (KFDA) - The Tulsa Drillers defeated the Amarillo Sod Poodles, 5-0, on Tuesday. The game was delayed by rain. First pitch was at 9:10 p.m., over two hours after the original 7:05 start time. Tulsa’s bid for a no-hitter lasted until the second-to-last Amarillo at-bat. Gavin Conticello singled on a ground ball in the top of the 7th to give the Sod Poodles their only hit of the game.
