Arriva, Keolis and QBuzz are competing for 15-year Vechtdal Lines concession. INCUMBENT Arriva is facing rival bids from Keolis and QBuzz for a 15-year concession to operate regional passenger services on the Vechtdal Lines network in the Netherlands. The contract is being tendered by the provinces of Overijssel and Drenthe. Selection of the preferred bidder is expected in July.

CZECH signalling company AŽD Praha has started operating driverless passenger trains with a railcar equipped with ATO at Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4). The converted class 811 diesel railcar Edita will haul a class 010 trailer in public service at selected weekends on the 24km Kopidlno - Dolni Bousov line in the northern part of the Czech Republic.

CZECH private operator RegioJet began running trains on a new commuter route in Prague on April 1. Services were originally due to start on Line 61 with the timetable change in December, but delays in authorising new Pesa class 655 Elf EMUs resulted in the inauguration of the new route being pushed back until this month. RegioJet ordered seven dual-voltage Elf EMUs from Pesa after winning a tender in November 2021 to operate commuter services on lines S61 and S49.

THE reintroduction of passenger services has been approved on the line linking Coevorden in the Netherlands with Bad Bentheim in northwestern Germany. A final decision was taken by a joint working group on March 14 after issues relating to vehicle authorisation and train protection systems had been resolved.

DUTCH start-up GoVolta has been forced to postpone the launch of its planned low-budget cross-border services as Rabobank has declined to provide financial backing, despite initially supporting the venture. GoVolta announced last year its intention to launch a daily Amsterdam - Berlin service in September 2025, with other potential destinations including Paris, Basle, Hamburg and Copenhagen.

THE Czech Ministry of Transport has awarded Arriva a contract to operate two fast services in the west of the country. Arriva’s bid of Koruna 3bn ($US 130m) was the lowest to operate Ex6 West Express, from Prague to Cheb via Pilsen. and R16 from Prague to Zelezna Ruda and Klatovy via Pilsen. The contract runs for 15 years, starting from December 2028, with a volume of 50.1 million train-km over that period.

Passengers must no longer change at Innsbruck after Italian traction issues are finally resolved. The northbound service on February 23 started from Innsbruck rather than Venice. PRIVATE night train operator European Sleeper has finally been able to operate its winter service between Brussels and Venice throughout. The first direct southbound train ran on March 5, and is due to return on March 8.

BAVARIAN transport minister Christian Bernreiter has called on Germany’s new federal government to institute fundamental reforms in the way funding is allocated to rail infrastructure projects. Speaking at a conference in Bavaria on February 25 he said: “According to the legal framework railways are the responsibility of the German federal government, but the government isn’t acting quickly enough. That is why Bavaria has stepped in to provide funding ourselves.
