    SEATTLE β€” Traffic deaths fell in Washington state last year for the first time since 2019, according to new data from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission (WTSC). Preliminary traffic data from the WTSC found that 731 people died in traffic crashes in 2024, a decrease from 809 traffic deaths in 2023. The death toll in 2023 was a 33-year high, according to the WTSC. Washington's traffic deaths hovered around 550 each year from 2015 to 2020, before deaths spiked to 674 in 2021 and 743 in 2022.

    SEATTLE β€” After two months of reminders, King County Metro said it will begin full fare enforcement starting Saturday. King County Metro fare enforcement officers will start issuing printed warnings and citations Saturday to riders who do not have proof of fare payment on buses and streetcars. The agency said during the fare education phase in April and May, 76% of riders had proof of payment. Fare enforcement officers told the other riders about reduced fare programs and ways to prove payment.

    SNOQUALMIE, Wash. β€” A section of state Route 18 (SR 18) will close in both directions beginning Thursday night, allowing crews to build part of a new interchange near Snoqualmie. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) said the closure will begin at 9 p.m. Thursday and last until June 4 at 5 a.m. WSDOT said all people traveling through the I-90/SR 18 interchange during the closure should plan for delays.
