Christmas houseFor 21 years, the late Betty Weavers, known to many as Mrs Christmas, brought joy to the lives of many, opening her decorated home during the festive season. When she died following a short illness in 2022, one of the Temuka woman’s final wishes was that her decorations, lovingly collected over many years, continued to be shared with the community.

Returning to her roots, artist Debbie Templeton-Page has given back to the community she spent a big part of her childhood in. The Timaru sculptor recently donated one of her works to the community of Arowhenua where she spent many of her formative years, saying she had always wanted to pay tribute to her childhood there. “Most of my childhood was spent in Arowhenua after we came over from Tasmania [Australia],’’ she said. “I still have cousins out there and wanted to give back to the community.

It’s all coming up roses as the district enters a busy weekend featuringan annual festival, a Christmas celebrations and sporting events. The two-day Timaru Festival of the Roses gets under way on Saturday with a host of events on offer including workshops, a market day and the return of a wearable arts event. And getting into the festive spirit, Temuka host the first of the district’s Christmas parades on Friday evening followed by Timaru on Sunday afternoon.
