More than €240,000 has been raised at the Annual Cork Simon Community Ball – a 26% increase on funds raised at previous events. The gala event, which took place at Fota Island Resort last month, saw €243,000 raised for the service, marking a significant increase of more than €50,000 on funds raised in 2024. Organisers of the event have said that this year’s donations stand as the most raised in one night in the history of the ball.

A city councillor has said that higher rental increases and the potential removal of rental pressure zones (RPZs) in Cork would be an attack on renters who are “already struggling”. Earlier this year, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said that the Government will review all housing policies in 2025, including considering whether to abolish RPZs, which are due to expire on December 31. RPZs are designated areas where rents cannot be increased by more than general inflation or by 2% per annum.

A fisherman was rescued off the Cork coast yesterday, in what was the fourth call-out completed by the Courtmacsherry RNLI crew in the last seven days. The crew were dispatched at 11.22am on Tuesday aboard the all-weather lifeboat Val Adnams following a distress call regarding an 18ft fishing boat, which had experienced a mechanical failure off the coast of Howe Strand at the Kilbrittain side of Courtmacsherry Bay.

The Cork Summer Show, Munster’s largest and longest-running agricultural showcase, will return to Leeside next month, with more than 40,000 attendees expected. The event, taking place on June 14 and 15 at the Cork Showgrounds in Curraheen, will feature a headline set by singer-songwriter Mundy and live cookery demos from TikTok star Edgar Kirby as part of the celebration.

Cork City Council has said that 25% of applications received for Vacant Property Grants in 2025 have come from the South East ward. In response to a written question, submitted by Labour Party councillor for Cork city South East, Peter Horgan, a representative for the council said that they have received 57 Vacant Property Grant applications between January and April, 14 of which have come from the South East ward.
