With more than 150 years to its name, Scholz Garten is older than anybody on the planet. This was the first bar in town and the first beer garden in the country—yet somehow it doesn’t feel outdated or smell like mothballs. Instead, the patio fills up a couple of hours before every Longhorns game or Moody event, maybe because you can get a massive 32-ounce stein of Hofbrau Original for about the cost of a Bud Light.

Tumble 22 brought Nashville-style heat to Austin back in 2017 as a humble trailer, and it’s now a local staple with several locations around Texas. Whether you’re in for a quick lunch or a long dinner with “adult lemonades,” the bone-in pieces are the move if you don’t mind getting a little messy. It just reopened—they were on a four-year hiatus after the pandemic, and I'm so happy they're back. It's just a little shack and they serve until the food's gone."“I love Kreuz Market. It’s not actually in Austin city limits—it's in Lockhart, which is about 40 minutes away, but it's well worth the drive. I used to go there with my family after church.

Credit: Victor Protasio / Food Styling by Margaret Monroe Dickey / Prop Styling by Claire Spollen When I moved to Texas, I thought smoking brisket in the rusty old backyard smoker would be easy. I didn’t expect a total barbecue fail — or that a tried and true side dish would save the day. I had relocated to Texas to live with my girlfriend, and our rental house came with an offset smoker in the backyard. It felt like an obligation for any new Texas resident to smoke meat in the thing.
