RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT)—On Memorial Day, Virginians gathered at the Virginia War Memorial to pay tribute to all the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice. The ceremony was emotional and powerful as veterans, current service members, families and the community took a moment to mourn and honor the fallen. “We came to remember our son, Capt. Shane Adcock, he was killed in Iraq in 2006,” Vera Adcock said. Every day is hard for Maris and Vera Adcock, but Memorial Day is one of the hardest.

PETERSBURG, Va. (WWBT)—Richmond is close to adding a plastic bag tax, and now Petersburg may be looking to add one, too. A councilman proposed the idea this week, hoping to clean up the city. “I believe we pay enough for food, and the bags should come free; we shouldn’t have to pay for the bag if we’re supporting the store,” Petersburg resident Kathy Pender said. It’s been a long-standing debate in Petersburg whether or not to have a tax on plastic bags.

This week, Richmond’s Urban Design committee voted unanimously to approve a conceptual design for the park. “One of Richmond’s strong suits is that it has such quick and easy access to nature, so anything that can enhance that or take advantage of it, I’m all about,” Richmond resident Jonathan Lewis said.

PETERSBURG, Va. (WWBT) - Bullying is all too common in our schools, and one mother says bullies at a Petersburg middle school nearly pushed her daughter over the edge. She said her daughter attempted suicide after being bullied by a group of students at Vernon Johns Middle School. “The group of girls were bullying her friends too on behalf of her, so she said to her friends via text messages,” a mom who wanted to remain anonymous to protect her family said.
