The monkey is not usually supposed to go off the script set by the organ-grinder, and if it does it will be put in its place, sharply. But what really happened? Trump is in power now. He has come to power on the basis of a program to put an end to the war in Ukraine. Everyone knows that.

As they say in planes, “ladies and gentlemen, please remain seated with your seatbelts fastened, because we have entered an area of turbulence.”It’s only been one week since Trump entered power. It’s been a few weeks more since he was elected in November, and the whole of the world situation has been transformed. We have seen – just from the point of view of Trump’s actions – the ceasefire in Gaza, the threat of military action against Denmark, a NATO member and an ally of the US, and Panama.

Before Trump had even been confirmed as the 47th President of the United States of America, one European think tank had declared that “the biggest crisis in transatlantic relations since Suez” is in progress. An EU bureaucrat echoed the same sentiment: “Are there any EU-US relations left?” Panic is ripping through the halls of power in Europe. It’s not hard to see why.

A recently published report from the Royal College of Nursing paints a grim portrait of the advanced decay affecting the NHS today. The report, On the frontline of the UK’s corridor care crisis, contains accounts from 5,000 RCN members detailing the use of corridors, car parks, cupboards, bathrooms, and nursing stations as makeshift areas for treating patients. There is no shortage of harrowing experiences.

Over the last few months, a trickling of reports have come out which show that Tulip Siddiq (MP for Hampstead and Highgate) who has been appointed to investigate corruption in the financial sector on behalf of the government, is in fact, entirely submerged in the corrupt financial and political dealings of her own family in Bangladesh. It would be embarrassing for Keir Starmer, if it wasn’t a perfect example of the vacuous cynical nature of the current Labour government.

War ‘studies’ department, or war practice? Anna Davidson-Walsh, KCL studentI recently read in The Communist about the King’s College London (KCL) “infamous” war studies department. Back in 2022, a set of documents from 2013 were uncovered outlining the relationship between KCL and the Ministry of Defence (MoD). They agreed that KCL would “mentor” foreign spies attending courses on “professional matters”, as instructed by the MoD.
