Goleta Board Reviews 3-Story Housing Project, Repurposed Hangar Proposal

A three-story housing project proposed for Goleta doesn’t fit in with its neighborhood, Design Review Board members and nearby residents said. A 10-unit apartment building is planned for the vacant lot at 7020 Calle Real next to the One Stop Shop Market and Liquor store. Story poles are at the project site, and the developers went to the Goleta Design Review Board on Tuesday for a conceptual review hearing.
Santa Barbara County Rite Aids Spared From Closure, For Now

Rite Aid has declared bankruptcy and plans to immediately close 115 stores across the country, including 21 stores in California. Santa Barbara County’s five stores have been spared from the first round of closures, according to court documents filed as part of company’s bankruptcy. The drug store company entered voluntary Chapter 11 proceedings in U.S. Bankruptcy Court District of New Jersey on May 5, according to a news release from the company.
UCSB to Seek Rental for New Chancellor as House Undergoes Renovations

UC Santa Barbara will have to find alternative housing for the incoming chancellor because the on-campus University Chancellor House needs extensive renovations. The UC Regents, the governing board for the UC system, is expected to vote Wednesday to authorize delegates to secure a rental for the new chancellor, who has yet to be selected. Current Chancellor Henry Yang, who is one of the longest-serving chancellors in the UC system, is stepping down at the end of this school year.
Carpinteria Unified School District Reaches Agreement With Employee Union

After 23 months of negotiations, it seems that the Carpinteria Unified School District and the employee union have struck a deal. The tentative agreement includes a 5% salary increase for employees, a $3,000 stipend for special education teachers, and bonuses for current and recently retired employees.

The long awaited Fire Station 10 in Goleta still has a long way to go before it’s up and running, but city officials say they are looking for ways to move the project along. The city is in discussions with the Santa Barbara County Fire Protection District over how the project will get funded, and Assistant City Manager Jaime Valdez said officials are even considering changing designs to make the project less expensive. “We’re looking at different alternatives in terms of funding,” Valdez said.
Teresa Martinez Appointed As Santa Barbara Superior Court Judge

On Wednesday, Governor Gavin Newsom appointed attorney Teresa Martinez to the Santa Barbara Superior Court bench. Martinez, a registered Democrat, is filling a vacancy after Judge Jean Dandona recently retired. She will be sworn in on May 27. Martinez has a long legal history in Santa Barbara. Since 2018 she has served as a Senior Deputy County Counsel at the Santa Barbara County Counsel’s Office, according to court executive officer Darrel Parker.

On the morning of Sept. 25, 2024, Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Deputy Christopher Nelson was just feet away from an explosive that sent burning debris flying and filled the lobby of the Santa Barbara County Courthouse in Santa Maria with smoke. He and private security guard Steve Neil acted quickly, chasing the bombing suspect through smoke and out to his vehicle where he had a loaded rifle, a shotgun and more improvised explosives.

The Goleta City Council on Tuesday awarded $120,000 to Old Town businesses that are struggling financially during ongoing construction. The grants will go toward funding murals, advertising campaigns, shop and walk events, and building expansions. Councilman James Kyriaco said good things are just around the corner for Old Town that will make it easier for businesses and residents to thrive.
County Approves Rental Housing Inspection Program for Isla Vista

Some Isla Vista residents have to deal with mold, exposed wiring, rickety balconies and other poor housing conditions, but a new program allows the county to proactively inspect rentals and ensure issues are fixed. On Tuesday the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to establish a pilot rental inspection program in Isla Vista. The goal is to hold landlords accountable for doing required maintenance and making sure rentals meet basic health and safety standards.
