Eagle-eyed residents may have noticed story poles for a new development in western Goleta during the past few weeks. The story poles outline a proposed 202,920-square-foot self-storage facility at 7780 Hollister Ave., which is currently the site of a parking lot. The site is next to Westmont of Santa Barbara, an assisted-living facility, and across the street from the Ellwood Mesa butterfly grove.
Bear Struck by Vehicle on Highway 101 in Summerland

A bear was reportedly hit by a vehicle on Highway 101 in Summerland Tuesday night. The bear was reportedly struck by a black Range Rover in the southbound fast lane around 9:36 p.m. near the Padaro Lane off ramp, according to Officer Jonathan Gutierrez of the Santa Barbara California Highway Patrol. As of now it’s unclear if this was the same bear that was seen last week wandering around Goleta and UC Santa Barbara.
New Steelhead Trout Spawn After Relocation to Arroyo Hondo Creek

After more than 200 Southern California steelhead trout were rescued from getting washed out by mudslides, dozens of new trout have spawned in their new home at the Arroyo Hondo Preserve. In January, California Department of Fish and Wildlife personnel spent a day rescuing the trout, a nearly extinct population, just before mudslides washed large amounts of ash and sentiment into Topanga Creek after the devastating Palisades Fire in Los Angeles County.

The dreams of bringing back the Fiesta Stock Horse Show and Rodeo for this year are officially dead. The Old Spanish Days Board of Directors announced on Monday that the rodeo was officially not happening this year due to financial constraints and an inability to work out a deal with Earl Warren Showgrounds. They first announced the end of the event in early April, but had hoped to keep the annual event alive, even in another form.

The is working to get Goleta’s furry tourist home. UC Santa Barbara sent an alert to the campus community saying that Fish and Wildlife and university police were planning to trap and relocate the black bear that has been wandering around Goleta and Isla Vista. The bear has been the talk of the town this week, with photos and and videos circling social media of the bear visiting neighbors in Goleta and wandering around UCSB.
Santa Barbara County Foodbank Ending Empty Bowls Fundraisers

After 27 years, the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County is ending its popular Empty Bowls fundraisers due to federal funding cuts, nonprofit leaders said. Greg Mora, director of development, said they are facing a $1.5-million gap due to the end of funding they usually received from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). “We really had to make the hard decision of where to put our efforts to ensure that we can have access to the food that people need,” Mora said.
UCSB Purchases Vacant Lot From Friendship Manor to Build Housing

UC Santa Barbara has purchased the empty lot at the corner of El Colegio Road and Camino Pescadero in Isla Vista to build housing for graduate students, postdocs, and researchers in the physics department. UCSB’s Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP) will design, build and furnish the facility to house 15-20 KITP post doctoral researchers, up to 12 visiting graduate fellows, and 10-14 researchers-in-residence, according to UCSB spokesperson Kiki Reyes.

Where’s the bear? Goleta and UC Santa Barbara officials have sent out warnings this week after black bear sightings around town. Videos have been circling on social media of a bear exploring Goleta, approaching front doors and narrowly avoiding getting hit by vehicles near Winchester and Cathedral Oaks Road. Early Thursday morning, UCSB warned students to avoid the area near the Intercollegiate Athletics Gym and Pollock Theater off Ocean Road after the black bear was spotted in the area.
