BANGKOK - At least 1,644 people are confirmed dead in Myanmar after the earthquake, Myanmar Now news outlet reported on Saturday, citing the military leadership. According to reports, more than 3,400 people in Myanmar have been injured, with hundreds feared trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings. The 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit central Myanmar on Friday at a depth of 10 kilometers, the United States Geological Survey said. It was followed minutes later by a 6.7-magnitude aftershock.

A Delta Air Lines plane carrying 80 people crashed at a Canadian airport on Monday afternoon, the airline and local authorities said, leaving the aircraft upside down and 18 people injured. The CRJ900 aircraft, operated by Endeavor Air, was travelling from the US city of Minneapolis to the Canadian city of Toronto when it was involved in a "single aircraft accident upon landing" at Toronto Pearson International Airport at about 2:30 pm ( 1930 GMT), Canadian airport authorities said.

Der Legende nach soll er damals der Verfolgung durch einen rivalisierenden Stamm gerade noch entkommen sein. Die wichtigste Textzeile lautet dementsprechend: "Ka mate, ka mate, ka ora, ka ora", auf Deutsch etwa "Ich werde sterben, ich werde sterben, ich werde leben, ich werde leben." Für den Rekordversuch in Auckland wurde ebenfalls der Ka Mate ausgewählt.
